Senge Ling: Our Retreat Land

In 1991, members of the Kootenay Shambhala Centre began to develop a rural retreat facility on 25 acres of land an hour's drive south of Nelson. Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche blessed this land and named it Senge Ling ("Lion Place"). Our first project was a solitary retreat cabin, which the Sakyong named Rangjung ("Unborn").

Solitary retreat cabin

We ask that anyone planning to reserve the cabin for a solitary retreat first complete a weekthün or dathün (one-week or one-month group meditation retreat), consult with her/his meditation instructor, and be prepared to enter into retreat practice in a formal way. The cabin is ideally suited for isolated, strict retreats such as Chakrasamvara practice; it is equipped with a thojong and cairn and other basic sadhana supplies.

Our Centre has a strong tradition of public weekthüns: we’ve hosted 19 of them—and four fire pujas—since the Centre was founded in 1974. These retreats initially took place at various campsites in the Kootenay region. After we built the cabin, we decided to make Senge Ling a permanent home for weekthüns and fire pujas. The facility now includes a screened meditation pavilion, a kitchen hut and a bathhouse. Still, the rustic, outdoor flavour of our early retreats remains intact. There is no electricity, accommodation is in retreatants' own tents, and the pavilion opens on all sides to the forest.
